Forsus springs, also known as Forsus appliances, are a type of fixed functional orthodontic appliance we provide to patients in Burgess Hill to treat overbites, which occur when the upper front teeth extend too far over the lower front teeth.
One of the main advantages of Forsus Springs over other types of removable functional braces is that they are fixed in the mouth so are working 24 hours a day, every day as children cannot remove them by themselves. The other big advantage is that they work concurrently with fixed braces, so the overall treatment time is relatively fast (12-18 months). This is contrast to removable functional braces (such as the twin block) which is done as a separate phase of treatment before the train tracks are fit.
Forsus springs are typically used to correct overbites, which occur when the upper teeth protrude too far forward over the lower teeth and may be caused by a underdeveloped lower jaw. They can also be used to correct other types of malocclusions, including crossbites and centreline discrepancies.
Forsus springs work by applying a constant, gentle force to the teeth, which helps to move the lower teeth forward and upper teeth backwards into a more favorable position. There may also be a small effect on the forward growth of the lower jaw. The appliance consists of a metal rod that is attached to the upper and lower braces, and a coil spring that generates the force needed to move the teeth and jaw. When you bite down, the spring is compressed which generates the force required.
Forsus springs work in conjunction with fixed braces. Typically, the Forsus Springs will be fit 6-9 months into the treatment with the fixed braces and removed again after about 6 months, although this varies depending on the severity of the overbite.
The use of Forsus springs is generally considered safe and effective, although like any orthodontic appliance, there may be some discomfort and adjustment period required. Patients may experience soreness or discomfort in the mouth, particularly in the first few days after the appliance is installed. It is important for patients to follow their orthodontist’s instructions for care and maintenance of the appliance, including proper cleaning and regular check-ups.
