Braces for Children & Teens – Give Your Child a Future They Can Smile About

  • Worried about how your child’s smile is developing?
  • Beginning to notice that the upper and lower jaws don’t line up?
  • Want to manage your child’s oral health now for a better future?

Children can get braces at any age – and it’s even possible for children to have braces while they still have baby teeth to help with the development of their jaw and facial muscles.

In fact, if you’re concerned about your child’s orthodontic health, our orthodontist, Dr Neil Woodhouse, recommends that children have screenings as early as age 7.

To ensure your child’s smile needs little intervention later in life, involve us now. We’re specialist orthodontists with three practices in West Sussex, East Sussex, and Kent, offering affordable orthodontic solutions for children and teens.

Braces treatment for children and teens overview:

  • Discreet brace options for under 18 to limit feeling self-conscious
  • Treatment specialist dentists in child and teen orthodontics
  • Removable brace options with performance indicators and stickers
  • Private treatment to beat NHS waiting lists
  • Braces that make the awkward years as fun as possible

Early intervention or phase 1 treatment has several benefits:

Why it might be better

  • Can reduce or eliminate the need for further orthodontic work
  • Children feel less self-conscious than in their teenage years
  • Saves space for permanent teeth to come through
  • Prevents crowding and tooth extraction later down the line
  • Corrects bite issues as they develop and guides jaw growth
  • Reduces the risk of any damage to protruding teeth

When children and teens are involved, our orthodontists often customise treatment plans unique to your child’s needs.

For example, two-phase treatment is a common option, in which treatment is carried out at two different times during adolescence to take advantage of predictable stages of dental and oral development.

The signs and symptoms your child or teen needs braces:

  • Early or late loss of primary (baby) teeth
  • Child or teen breathe through their mouth
  • Have crooked or overcrowded teeth that overlap
  • Bite irregularities forming like overbites and crossbites
  • Difficulty speaking, biting or chewing
  • Thumb-sucking or finger-sucking habit

When can children get braces? Is there a right time?

Typically, the best time for braces is when a child’s or teen’s jaws and mouth are still growing, with most of their adult, permanent teeth coming in, typically around 12 years old.

However, treatment is possible earlier and later, depending on the advice from an orthodontist on the appropriate action to take.

In truth, there’s no perfect age to begin realigning the smile, but it’s recommended that this process happens while the bones in the jaw are still developing as it will be faster and easier and avoid any social stigmas.
