Types of metal braces

Kinds to choose from

There are two main types of metal braces: the traditional type and the self-ligating type. Both are suitable for a wide range of malocclusions; however, self-ligating braces use built-in systems instead of elastic bands to hold the archwire in place.

Metal brace types:

  • Ceramic braces: Ceramic braces use white, tooth-coloured (or clear) brackets, which make them much less visible than traditional types. However, they still use metal wires, making them a type of fixed metal brace. Prices from £3,290. Learn more.
  • Lingual braces: Also known as hidden braces or incognito braces, lingual braces sit behind the teeth instead of on the front like traditional braces.
  • Damon braces: A self-ligating brace, Damon braces are usually metal or ceramic and use a sliding mechanism to hold the wires.

The cost of metal braces

Average prices vs our prices

How much do metal braces cost on average in the UK? The traditional type costs £4,000 to £5,500 in the UK, as opposed to white, ceramic versions or lingual braces, which sit behind the teeth.

Across our three clinics in East Sussex, West Sussex, and Kent, we charge from £3990 for metal braces for upper and lower arch straightening. The cost of your treatment includes all your appointments and adjustments, fixed or bonded retainers with a 3-year guarantee, and removable Essix retainers following treatment.

We also offer 12 months of 0% finance for patients wanting to spread the cost of their treatment and pay monthly. To straighten both upper and lower arches, patients can pay £332.50 per month for 12 months, with no additional cost of credit and no requirement to place a deposit.

Metal Braces Before and After

Patient’s quick guide to metal braces

Are metal braces better?

Metal braces are a reliable choice. They’re durable, strong and a good choice for both teens and adults.

They are generally cheaper than other types of braces and are effective in complex tooth movements, treating rotated teeth and all types of malocclusions.

However, finding the right type of straightening system will depend on your goals, commitment, and patience. Book a consultation to discover which type of braces will work best.

Do metal braces take longer?

If you have a complex orthodontic issue, there’s no shortcut or fast fix to realign your teeth and bite.

Even though there are fast versions of Invisalign, they’re not suitable for patients with severe bite problems who require more complex movement, so metal braces might be perceived as taking longer in some scenarios. That said, metal braces can take anywhere from 6-24 months, up to 6 months slower than Invisalign Comprehensive in some cases.
