Clear Braces in Burgess Hill information

Clear braces at our clinic in Burgess Hill, also known as ceramic braces, work in the same way as metal “train track” braces but they are much less visible. They can be used to treat almost any orthodontic problem making them one of the most versatile brace options. They are suitable for both children and adults and are usually the brace of choice for individuals who want the braces to be discreet but may have orthodontic problems too complex for aligners to handle.

After the initial assessment and treatment planning stages, getting started with ceramic braces is quick and straight forward. The appointment to fit the braces will typically last a maximum of one hour. Your orthodontist will fix the ceramic brackets onto each tooth using a special type of glue. This is a painless procedure requiring no anaesthetic and no drilling.

A wire will then be inserted into the ceramic brackets held in with tiny little clear elastic bands. Once the braces have been fit the Neyo team will show you everything you need to know about caring for your braces including how to keep them clean, what foods you should avoid and how to minimise breakages.

The first week getting used to your new braces can be tough. As your mouth adjusts, your teeth might feel tender to touch and some people may develop ulcers where the lips and cheeks are rubbing on the braces. Normal pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen are effective in reducing the tenderness. The discomfort usually subsides completely within one week.

You will return to see your orthodontist approximately every 6 weeks to check the health of your teeth, and to have the braces tightened and adjusted. These appointments typically last no more than 20 minutes. Your teeth may be sore again for a few days after each adjustment. Depending on the complexity of your orthodontic problems, and the treatment goals, you can expect treatment to last for 6-24 months, or sometimes even longer if you have problems such as impacted teeth or missing teeth. Your orthodontist will be able to give you a more bespoke estimate of treatment time.

Occasionally breakages occur, and you may need to visit your orthodontist to repair the braces in between the regular adjustment appointments. While anyone can experience breakages, they can be minimised significantly if the braces are cared for properly.

Once the treatment is complete and you are happy with the result, the braces will be removed and retainers will be fit. Retainers are necessary to avoid movement of the teeth. Fixed retainers are discreet wires fixed onto the back of the front teeth, which are usually kept in place long term. Removable retainers are clear plastics retainers that are worn at night time. You will normally be fit with both types of retainer, and you will be instructed on how to care for them, and the long term strategy for maintenance.

You will continue to see your orthodontist every few months for a couple of years to monitor the bite, the position of the teeth and the condition of the retainers. After this, you will always be welcome to come back to Neyo if you have any concerns or questions.

Clear Braces FAQs

Do ceramic braces stain or go yellow?

The ceramic brackets themselves are very resistant to staining and it is extremely unlikely that they will discolour. The little clear elastics that hold the wire in place can pick up staining though. Certain foods and drinks such as curry or red wine will cause the elastics to stain more, however the elastics are changed for a fresh set every 6 weeks. You can modify your diet to reduce the staining, and some people prefer to use brightly coloured elastics which don’t stain in the same way.

Will I need to take any time off work or school after the braces are fit?

No. While the braces will be uncomfortable for a few days after they have been fit, you should be fine to return to work or school straight away. Just pack some painkillers just in case!

Can I eat normally with ceramic braces?

For the most part, you can eat a full diet with fixed ceramic braces. Certain foods that are very hard (e.g., raw carrots or crusty bread) should be avoided otherwise breakages to the brace will occur frequently. Very sticky foods (e.g. toffee) should also be avoided completely. Other foods, such as apples, can be eaten but we recommend cutting them up first. The Neyo team will go through all of the instructions around eating and drinking  in detail on the day the braces are fit.

How do I keep my teeth clean during treatment?

As these braces cannot be removed for cleaning, extra time and effort is required to keep the braces clean. The Neyo team will go through some tips and techniques for cleaning, and you will be given some additional cleaning aids after your braces are fit. Your orthodontist will monitor the cleanliness of the teeth and braces and let you know if improvements are required.

Are ceramic braces completely Invisible?

Ceramic braces are visible but are not as obvious as metal braces. They will be harder to see in photographs and people generally feel less self-conscious than they might with metal braces. While Invisalign aligners are less visible than ceramic braces, ceramic braces give your orthodontist more possibilities with movements of the teeth in a way that is not always possible with Invisalign.
