Tooth or Gum Abscess

Information on this concern

About this concern

A Dental Abscess is a build-up of infection in the tooth or gum. Unfortunately a dental abscess will not go away on its own and your body is saying there is something going on that needs attention.

Common causes of a Dental Abscess include a decayed tooth, a cracked tooth and gum disease. Tooth related abscesses start inside the tooth (called the pulp) and will travel down the root and can spread to the jaw bone. The infection can build up enough for the pus to drain on its own. Gum related abscesses start by food getting trapped under the gum causing the gum to become swollen. If left untreated it sometimes can cause the gum to recede and teeth can become loose.
