Why have an apicectomy?

Preservation of a natural tooth that might otherwise be at risk of extraction.
The meticulous removal of the infected tissue and sealing of the root tip during apicectomy reduce the risk of reinfection.
Can offer a higher success rate in cases with complex root canal anatomy or when retreatment options are limited.
Apicectomy involves removing only the infected or damaged portion of the tooth’s root, preserving the surrounding bone structure.
It all begins with a specialist consultation priced at £95, where you will sit down with Dr. Vanderley for a comprehensive evaluation. During this visit, we take digital X-rays or advanced 3D scans to examine the exact anatomy of your tooth root and surrounding bone, ensuring an apicectomy is the right solution for you.
The apicectomy procedure involves making a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the infected area around the root tip. The infected or damaged tissue is then carefully removed, and the root tip is shortened. A small filling is placed at the end of the root canal to seal it. The gum tissue is then sutured back into place. Apicectomy is often performed using magnification and under local anaesthesia to ensure precision and patient comfort.
Finally, we provide you with clear, easy-to-follow aftercare instructions to guide you through a smooth and rapid recovery.

Your comfort is our top priority. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, meaning you will not feel any pain while the surgery is taking place-only minor pressure. Afterwards, as the gum heals, you might experience some mild tenderness or swelling, which can easily be managed with standard over-the-counter pain relief like ibuprofen or paracetamol.
Most apicectomies take between 45 minutes to 90 minutes, depending on the complexity and position of the affected tooth. Our team will ensure you are fully informed and comfortable throughout the entire visit.
A standard root canal cleans the infection from inside the crown and canals of the tooth. An apicectomy is a minor surgical procedure performed from outside the tooth through the gum line, specifically targeting the very tip of the root where persistent bacteria or small fractures may be trapped.
Most patients are back to their normal daily routines within a couple of days. We recommend eating soft foods, avoiding heavy chewing on the treated side for a short time, and maintaining gentle oral hygiene. Complete healing of the bone around the root tip takes place gradually over the following months.
If an apicectomy is not suitable for your specific tooth anatomy or if the tooth structure is too compromised, the primary alternative is tooth extraction. However, a missing tooth will typically require a replacement option such as a dental implant, bridge, or denture, which is why saving your natural tooth with an apicectomy is often the preferred choice.
