If you’re suffering with advanced gum disease, periodontal surgery can help restore your healthy smile. By treating lost bone, receding gums and other issues, we can help prevent tooth loss and create a more stable foundation for your ongoing oral hygiene.
Periodontal surgery allows us to directly access plaque and calculus that has built up beneath the gum line, promoting better oral health. Surgical procedures also include gum grafting, crown lengthening and periodontal regeneration.

We begin with a detailed consultation in our welcoming practice. We examine your case and explain the surgical procedures needed to improve your gum health. We take a very friendly approach, and always welcome you to ask any questions you have.
At the start of your periodontal surgery, we use local anaesthetic to ensure you remain comfortable throughout treatment. For conservative periodontal surgery, we use ultrasonic equipment to remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line.
We may smooth any irregularities found in the bone surrounding your teeth to ensure the best possible results. We then replace your gum, using tiny stitches to ensure a tighter and shallower gum pocket, preventing additional bone loss and avoiding tooth loss.

The surgery itself is typically painless, as we use local anaesthetic to completely numb the affected area before we begin your treatment. You may experience some mild discomfort or swelling once the anaesthetic wears off, but this is usually easily managed with standard over-the-counter pain relief.
Most patients can return to work or their normal daily routines either on the same day or within one to two days after the procedure. However, the complete healing of your gum and bone tissues underneath usually takes anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months.
Some minor bleeding after treatment is normal, and your saliva can appear pink for around 24 hours afterwards. There can also be some slight bruising or swelling that usually settles 3-5 days after treatment. The stitches in your gum are generally left to dissolve or removed after 7-14 days.
The numb sensation generally lasts 2-4 hours. To prevent you from chewing your lip, cheek, or tongue and burning your mouth, we do not recommend chewing any food or drinking hot drinks while you are numb. However, you can drink water straight after this treatment.
Yes, if you are feeling nervous or anxious about the prospect of periodontal surgery, we can arrange dental sedation treatment. This involves injecting medicine into a vein via a small cannula that makes you feel sleepy and relaxes you physically and mentally. You will need someone to take you home after treatment.
