Periodontal deep cleaning is a specialist procedure used to clean deep below the gum line, removing plaque and tartar build-up that is affecting your oral health.
Professional mechanical plaque removal (PMPR) is the most common treatment for achieving gum health and periodontal stability. Over time, this treatment has been known by many names, such as root planing, non-surgical periodontal therapy, subgingival scaling, or debridement.

Periodontal deep cleaning treatment involves professionally cleaning plaque and calculus from above and below the gumline and into the gum pocket. This allows the gum pocket to heal and often close, reducing it and creating a shallower pocket that will help prevent additional bone loss and avoid tooth loss.
We typically divide your treatment into 2-4 separate sessions, depending on the severity of your case and amount of gum disease present. During your appointment, we use local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort.
We can also use the most advanced ultrasonic equipment, the EMS Airflow® Master with temperature control, to remove plaque and calculus from all areas of your mouth. The treatment is gentle, with a fast recovery time.
contact us todayA local anaesthetic injection will be placed into the gum next to the teeth being treated. This will feel like a tiny sharp scratch or pinch, after which your gums and teeth will be numb. You will not feel any pain during the treatment.
The numb sensation feels tingly or heavy around the teeth being treated, including the lips, chin, cheek, and tongue. Advanced ultrasonic equipment uses water and gentle vibration to professionally clean and polish your teeth, removing plaque, calculus (tartar) and staining.
The time spent removing plaque and calculus depends on the severity and amount of gum disease, but the treatment typically takes around 30-60 minutes. You will not have your mouth open the whole time, and there are plenty of opportunities for breaks.
We recommend taking the rest of the day off work following your treatment. Most people recover quickly enough to be able to return to work the next day.
The numb sensation from the local anaesthetic generally lasts 2-4 hours. To prevent you from chewing your lip, cheek or tongue and burning your mouth, we recommend you avoid chewing any food or drinking hot drinks while you are numb. However, you can drink water straight after treatment. Some minor bleeding after treatment is normal, and your saliva can appear pink. You may also have some slight bruising and/or swelling, which usually settles 3-5 days after treatment.
It is common to feel some soreness after periodontal deep cleaning treatment. We recommend taking a painkiller straight away while you are still numb. Paracetamol and/or ibuprofen, available over the counter, are recommended. Taking painkillers will help prevent any immediate discomfort or pain. Every individual will experience a different level of soreness, so you may need to take painkillers for a couple of days after treatment, as advised.
Yes. Sedation involves injecting medicine into a vein via a small cannula that makes you feel sleepy and relaxes you physically and mentally. This medicine is given to you by an anaesthetist or a dental sedationist. You will need someone to take you home afterwards.
