If your child’s upper teeth protrude too far forward over the lower teeth, this is an overbite, and may be caused by an underdeveloped lower jaw. Forsus springs can be used to correct this and other types of malocclusions, including crossbites and centreline discrepancies.
Forsus springs work by applying a constant, gentle force to the teeth, helping to move the lower teeth forwards and the upper teeth backwards into a more favourable position. There may also be a small effect on the forward growth of the lower jaw.

We start your treatment with a comprehensive consultation in our specialist practice. We assess your child’s teeth and the severity of their overbite, and ensure that fixed braces and Forsus springs are the best course of action.
Forsus springs work in conjunction with fixed braces. Typically, the Forsus springs will be fitted 6-9 months into the treatment with the fixed braces and removed again after about 6 months, although this varies depending on the severity of the overbite.
We see you for regular appointments to ensure everything is on track for a great outcome. Once your treatment is complete, we give you some instructions for taking care of your smile, including proper cleaning and dental check-ups.
contact us todayWhen the Forsus spring is first attached, it may feel strange or uncomfortable in your mouth. You may experience some pressure or soreness around the teeth and jaw, which can make it difficult to eat or speak normally for the first few days. However, most patients adjust to the appliance quickly and any discomfort generally subsides within a week or two. Any discomfort associated with Forsus springs is usually manageable with standard pain medication, such as ibuprofen or paracetamol. Occasionally your cheeks may rub on the springs and cause ulcers. If this becomes severe, please let us know. We may need to make some adjustments to the springs to make them more comfortable.
Forsus springs place larger forces on the teeth and braces. Because of this, breakages can be a little more common during this phase of treatment. If your Forsus springs break, you will need to see your orthodontist as soon as possible, which can be inconvenient for you.
If your Forsus appliance breaks, please contact Neyo Dental Specialists and we will arrange an emergency appointment for you to come in and have your braces fixed.
All functional braces work mainly by moving the teeth around, and changes to the jaw bones are fairly minimal. Forsus springs are very effective at moving the teeth, and the results are comparable to twin blocks. We also find that some children will not wear their twin blocks as much as they should be, so results can be compromised when compared with Forsus springs.
Forsus springs are visible, as are the fixed braces that the appliance is fixed to. If the appearance is a concern to you, you may want to consider Invisalign Teen with mandibular advancement tabs as an alternative.
No, Forsus springs stay fixed in your mouth. This is one of the main advantages of Forsus springs, as they are working 24 hours a day, every day, and children can’t remove them by themselves.
The appliance consists of a metal rod that is attached to the upper and lower braces, and a coil spring that generates the force needed to move the teeth and jaw. When you bite down, the spring is compressed which generates the force required.
