If your root canal treatment has failed, we can perform a re-root canal to try to restore your full oral health. The need for re-treatment is often caused by incomplete treatment, including if you elected to not have a crown following the procedure. Infection can also reoccur if the bacteria were not all successfully removed the first time.
When the tooth develops a new crack or cavity, or the crown on top has not been sealed correctly, bacteria can be reintroduced to the internal structures, leaving the tooth vulnerable to reinfection. Re-treatment is the best option.

We typically plan to complete your treatment in one visit, but sometimes a second visit is required. Often, however, your consultation and appointment will take place in one session.
We use local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort before entering your affected tooth and removing the previous root-filling material. We clean the infected areas of the root canal, rinse them to remove bacteria and shape them carefully.
We fill and cover the root canals to prevent bacteria from re-entering your tooth. A few weeks later, we check you are healing well and place a dental crown to protect your weakened tooth for the long term.
contact us todayWe use local anaesthetic to numb the affected area of your mouth, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. After treatment, you will likely experience some discomfort for around 2-3 days, but this can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen.
If you want to keep your natural tooth, you will need to have a re-root canal treatment. The only alternative is to remove the tooth, leaving you with a gap in your mouth that will incur additional costs to replace with a denture, bridge or implant. Re-root canal treatment and a dental crown are typically more cost-effective than tooth replacement options.
Factors that can increase the chance of successful treatment include visiting a dedicated specialist dental practice with a highly trained team. Opting for a good quality restoration to be placed following your treatment can also increase the tooth’s chance of survival. Also, following your dentist’s guidance and aftercare instructions to the letter will really help.
