From 6 Months to 2 Years For 100% Overbites

Invisalign works its fastest when it’s required for only simple movements. For example, if you have a few slightly crooked teeth in one jaw then you can expect treatment to last a few months.

However, with overbites, it’s not always so simple to judge because it depends on the extent of your bite problem and whether we need to address additional orthodontic problems simultaneously, like gaps or other misalignment issues.

But we understand this is the internet, and patients like to understand the treatment they’re interested in before pursuing it – and details like timelines are important. That’s why Dr Neil Woodhouse (specialist and award-winning orthodontist) has taken the time to break down the overbite cases he’s worked on, detailing how long they took and which type of brace system was used (fixed braces or clear aligners).

The average time Invisalign takes for an overbite

Typically, when correcting overbites with Invisalign, our specialist orthodontist, Dr Neil Woodhouse, usually recommends types like Invisalign Moderate or Invisalign Full, depending on severity (Invisalign Full is upper and lower arches, whereas Invisalign Moderate can target just one).

Invisalign Moderate can take 4-12 months, but before you get your hopes up, longer treatment times should be expected with overbites. Using Invisalign Full, treatment can take anywhere from 12 to 18 months.

Types of overbites and how long they take

Typical average timelines for bite severities include:

  • Mild overbite: Treatments times from 6-12 months
  • Moderate overbites: Treatment times from 12-18 months
  • Severe overbite: Treatment times vary from 18-24 months

Retainers, whether removable or fixed, must be worn following treatment.

Factors that affect timelines

Aside from complexity, age is another factor that often dictates how long treatment will be. When patients are younger, their jawbones are still developing, which makes their smiles more adaptable to orthodontic treatment.

So, if you’re an adult, you can still straighten your teeth rather quickly; they might take a little longer than in some teen cases.
